This publicity photograph was taken by the Ministry of Transport during the war, when I was Then one day Eve spotted a newspaper article about a scheme taking on girls as crew for canal boats, because all the men were off fighting. We just wanted to get out in the fresh air. It was very hard work and a culture shock, of course.
