Comprehensive sexual health education is making its way to Battle Ground high schools — but only as an option. The Battle Ground Public Schools Board of Directors on Monday approved a version of its high school health class that will include comprehensive sexual health education. The board voted 4 to 1 to create the new class, with Tina Lambert casting the only no vote. The health class is an elective, but it meets the state requirements for one semester of health, effectively giving high school students a choice between courses: one with comprehensive sexual health education, the other without.

Battle Ground schools approve sex education option
Public Schools in Battle Ground, Washington will stop teaching sex education to high-schoolers after the school board voted in favor of scrapping the curriculum at a Monday board meeting. The Battle Ground school district had been in the process of restructuring its sex-ed program, which included a unit focused on sexual orientation and gender identity. But the revamped curriculum sparked an outcry amongst parents and community members, who feared it would "promote promiscuity," according to the Columbian. Eighteen percent of people polled in a district survey reportedly feared the board members were attempting to "promote an LGBTQ agenda.



It threw out requirements that it teach sexual health education altogether. The board voted to overhaul its internal sexual health education policy, eliminating requirements that the district teach sex ed unless the state requires it. If districts do teach sexual health education, it must be comprehensive and compliant with state standards. The vote drew gasps and applause from a packed audience, many of whom wore teal shirts declaring their opposition to comprehensive sexual health education.
