UNFPA , the agency specializing in reproductive and maternal health worldwide, is working with 12 partners on the ground to distribute dignity kits, which contain sanitary pads, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste and towels. These items are helping women and girls maintain their personal hygiene even amid the destruction and displacement. The blast and its aftermath comes on top of the COVID pandemic and an economic crisis, years in the making. Job losses have curtailed family spending, even as disease prevention is becoming more urgent than ever. UNFPA partners have been canvassing blast-impacted areas as they distribute the dignity kits, speaking with women and girls about their circumstances. The work is challenging, but rewarding, they say.
The Syrian women and girls sold into sexual slavery in Lebanon
Lebanon: Syrian Women at Risk of Sex Trafficking | Human Rights Watch
The only time Rama, a year-old from Syria, broke down as she recalled her months of torture and sexual enslavement in a human trafficking ring in Lebanon was when she described how she lost her faith. Over the course of an hour, Rama — not her real name — described in harrowing detail a hellish nine months as part of the largest sex trafficking ring ever uncovered in Lebanon , in which she endured torture, including being beaten with cables and an electric baton, with a bathroom mat in her mouth to keep her from screaming. She was forced to have sex on average 10 times a day and imprisoned in a decrepit house without even a glimpse of sunlight. She also detailed the abuse of the other women who were enslaved in the network, forced to have abortions after unprotected sex with customers, and subjected to inhumane physical and psychological torture.
Sex Role Images in Lebanese Text Books
By Reuters Staff. BEIRUT Reuters - Lebanese security forces have broken up a human trafficking network and freed 75 girls, mostly Syrians, they said were beaten and forced into prostitution. A statement by the internal security forces, published on the National News Agency, said they arrested 10 men and eight women who had been guarding the girls during raids earlier this week on nightclubs and apartments in Jounieh, north of Beirut.
Previous research in socialization indicates that sex role definitions in a certain society are internalized and learned by its members through different means among which are books. The present study examines the image of women and the sex roles attributed to them in 52 Arabic text books printed between — and are currently in use by the majority of elementary and intermediate schools in Lebanon. The results of this survey are consistent with previous research findings on French, American and Italian books, which depict women in the traditional role of mother, whose major function is cooking and housekeeping. They are presented as martyrs who may only attain self-fulfillment through sacrificing their life for their husbands and children.
